Briar found Clawhorn as a small infant after Clawhorn's parents were killed by a rampant treehorn. He adopted Clawhorn as his own son and when Clawhorn was grown, allowed him to leave and wander by himself. When Ashe followed Clawhorn a few eight-of-days later, Briar realized what was happening to his family. BlackHawk had become hurtful to Ashe and their mother, Skye. BlackHawk even tried to rape Ashe once. That was when Briar decided to let Ashe follow after Clawhorn.

      Many moons ago, the tribe was attacked by evil humans, who sought to destroy all the "evil forest spirits". The tribe fought valiantly and still many died. To prove just how evil these humans were, they set fire to the elvin and animal corpses and the dens of the tribe. They took many prisoners to torture and play with. Briar was left for dead. Fortunately, he didn't die and managed to contact Clawhorn, who had the gift of long-range sending, and Ashe, through a dream that sent her into a trance. Claworn and Ashe left Ravenbrook soon after that.

      While Clawhorn and Ashe were with Briar, they felt BlackHawk, who had been captured by the humans, tortured and killed. Since Clawhorn and Ashe were the only family Briar had left, he followed them back to Ravenbrook where he has begun the healing process.
